Patreon & Blog Status Update

This is the first cross-post I’ve done between my blog and Patreon page in a long time. Beyond that, it’s a longer post, at least for Patreon. That said, I have a lot to say, so thank you in advance for taking the time to read it.
I’ve talked a few times about how the last few years have been rough on me. In particular, the last 12-15 months have been hell for my mental health. While there have been some positives for sure (Kotov Syndrome being published, new baby, and my older child going to preschool), there have been a lot of negative things I’ve had to deal with. I’ve talked about some of them publicly, including needing to take breaks from Patreon for mental health reasons, job search/promotion search struggles, as well as the death of my mom. There are far more things though that I’ve chosen not to share publicly. Some of these items are actually things that have been ongoing for the better part of 4-5 years now, but everything has come to a head in 2021, especially since June.
All of this has brought me to a point where I realize I can’t handle everything I’m trying to balance right now. As a result, I’ll be making the following changes going forward. All changes listed below will be indefinite or at least until I can get myself in a better place to be able to balance the continuously increasing responsibilities I have along with the number of projects I am able to manage.
  • The blog will be going off of having a regular schedule. Posts will be made on an as needed/as I can write them basis.
  • New chapters for Meeting Charlie Madagan will be paused indefinitely.
  • New alternate endings for Project Tasman will be paused indefinitely.
  • I likely will not be in a position to run a book charity drive this year like I have previous years. If someone else is willing to manage/run it, I’d definitely involve An Epilogue to Innocence and Kotov Syndrome as I’ve done in past years.
  • No new content will be posted beginning November 1, 2021 aside from the yearly thank you for supporting me gift in July-ish.
  • Tiers will be changing on November 1, 2021 to a two-tier system rather than the current four-tier system. The tiers will be $1 and $5 per month, respectively. Both tiers will be general support only. No tangible rewards will be given.
  • If you do not wish to support me via Patreon in light of the above changes, I completely understand. Please cancel your pledges before November 1, 2021 to avoid being charged for November.
  • If you wish to change pledge tiers in light of the above, please do so before November 1, 2021.
  • I intend to be starting a Ko-Fi at some point in the near future for those who want to give a one-time pledge time for whatever reason. When I do that, I’ll post it in the newsletter.
Other Projects
  • My new podcast, Incorrect Music Theories, will still be starting as previously scheduled in December 2021. I MIGHT convert this Patreon account into something for the show at some point, but it’s way too early for me to make that decision. I’m also SUPER close to reaching the advertiser threshold for the show, so please give the trailer a listen if you haven’t already.
  • Editing is in progress for the first draft of the sequel to Kotov Syndrome. This is my top priority once I stop waking up 3-4 times in the middle of the night to feed a newborn.
  • I intend to keep the newsletter going once per quarter, as it’s nowhere near as time consuming as the items I’ve chosen to cut back on. This is where I’ll do the bulk of my announcements, even before Twitter. Please sign up for it if you have not.
  • Finally, my Discord has kind of become just a place for people to hang out, post memes, and talk writing. If you’re interested in joining and have not, let me know, as I have to regenerate the join links frequently (they expire after 24 hours).
One last thing I want to mention is that I’m doing a coupon code for Kotov Syndrome via Smashwords as a way to hopefully drive some more sales there. The coupon runs through November 24th and will get you (or whoever else you share the coupon code with) 50% off of the book. Just go to this link and enter the coupon code BB76K.
For those reading this on the blog, stay tuned for more posts, whenever I post them. For those reading on Patreon, I want to thank you all for your support. If you choose to continue supporting me, thank you. If you choose not to, I 100% understand. Thank you for doing so to this point.
